Website

This website is in production to help myself keep up to date with the latest website technologies around and make sure I keep to web standard in the design process. My aim with this website is to make this site html and css compliant. This is checked using a tool from World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) who can validate the website code. This allows web developers to follow a set standard that is hopefully adopted by the software companies and enable a website to work across most web browsers today. This may not be a reality, but there is only so much you can do. I have tested the website to work with multiple browsers. They include:

Chrome Chrome Windows XP, Windows Vista
Firefox Firefox Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista , Mac OSX
Internet Explorer 6 IE6 Windows 2000 and XP
Internet Explorer 8 IE8 Windows XP and Vista
Opera 9 Opera Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista , Mac OSX
Safari Safari Windows, XP and Vista, Mac OSX

For most websites I would recommend Opera. The next choice is Firefox. These browsers will help you view many websites whilst keeping your browsing safe as possible. They have also been made to use in multiple operating systems. Some of the current issues can be found here

I am implementing the following technologies:

  • PHP - allows for dynamic webpages to be made
  • XHTML - for web browser viewing
  • CSS - for ease of formatting at an instance
  • RSS - to allow for news feeds
  • WAP - for showing part of this website for mobile phones (only view using a WAP enabled device)
  • MySQL - for holding records, such as the RSS feed

To make the website less painful when browsing, I am avoiding the following:

  • Advertisements - they are really annoying
  • Pop ups - I won't tell you you can win something by calling an 090 number
  • JavaScript - has some good uses but will avoid due to reputation
  • Bloated images - large images that take too much time to load
  • Flash - slowing down browsing is a no no. Flash becomes annoying after a few minutes
  • Audio - when loading a webpage this should not play. That's what a play button is for
